About

Sunshine After Dark was a weekly radio show "all about disco" produced by John Huck in Edmonton, Alberta for campus/community radio station CJSR between 2019 and 2025. The show was also carried by CHMA in Sackville, New Brunswick and CKXU in Lethbridge, Alberta.

The show chronicled the month-by-month development of disco between 1974 and 1980. Once I'd finished doing 1980, I decided that 1981 and beyond would be a chapter for another day. I've kept this blog around for sentimental reasons. But CJSR let me keep the email address. And I believe CHMA continues to play the old episodes at the usual time, and who am I to argue with such a fine, generous group of people possessed with such exquisite taste in disco music.

My philosophy about the show

Sunshine After Dark tells the story of disco from its humble origins in the clubs and communities of New York City, through subsequent phases of international fame, commercial exploitation, icarian fall, and underground redemption. The spirit of disco never died and is celebrated on dance floors around the world today. On the show, I explore classic disco, Philly soul, jazz-funk, Euro disco, Canadian disco, Italo disco, post-disco, Hi-NRG, modern edits, and more.

Sunshine After Dark is like a spaceship on a journey to another time and place. I take the attitude that I am still learning what disco actually was and is and the show is a vehicle for that learning. Over the course of the past three years, I have become fascinated with the idea of playing sets of songs released in the same month or year, like a time capsule, which unlocks a unique listening experience and proves that the affective power of the music remains potent, given the right context.
